Truax Field in Madison is the military’s top choice to become home to an F-35 fighter squadron.
Officials say the 18 advanced jets would be flown by the Air National Guard’s 115th Fighter Wing and replace all of the old F-16 fighters currently based at Truax Field. The planes would arrive in 2022.
At a press conference Thursday afternoon, Governor Walker said he couldn’t be more thrilled and proud to hear about the announcement.
“Besides just being an exciting thing this is really state-of-the-art. We’re talking about aircrafts here who are nearing the end of a life cycle of 25 to 30 years so the F-35 is the most advanced most technology advanced aircraft in the world today,” said Walker.
