APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) – Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker visited Fox Valley Technical College Tuesday to discuss his proposals to make college more affordable, particularly for students in tech schools.

The governor says these steps include the tuition freeze for University of Wisconsin schools, an increase in grants for technical college students, restoration of the GI Bill, and the creation of a scholarships program for students who lead their classes in technical education.

“Great Lakes has shown us the data, that if you just provide a little bit of assistance to get that student over the hump, it’s remarkable how statistically–not just gut feeling–but there’s empirical evidence to show, that with that assistance, those students are much more likely to stay enrolled,” Gov. Walker said.

The governor also touted the creation of a Student Loan Debt Specialist in the Department of Financial Institutions.
